7hr National USPAP Update Course

Instructor: Mark Smeltzer, SRA

This one-day update course, copyrighted by The Appraisal Foundation, focuses on recent changes to USPAP requirements for ethical behavior and competent performance by appraisers. The course, which clarifies several commonly misunderstood aspects of USPAP, will aid appraisers in all areas of appraisal practice seeking updated competency in USPAP, including those subject to state licensing or certification and continuing education requirements imposed by professional organizations, client groups, or employers.

NOTE: An appraiser must successfully complete the 7-hour USPAP Update Course every two years to meet the USPAP continuing education requirement.

The appraiser can take the 15-hour USPAP course, but it will only count for hours toward his or her state’s continuing education requirement; the 15-hour program will not meet the USPAP continuing education requirement.

Course price does not include a copy of the current USPAP edition, which is required for course credit. Attendees must bring their own copy of the USPAP edition to class.

Student Materials

Student materials include a DOWNLOADABLE version of the current USPAP, OR registrants may opt to purchase a hard copy to be mailed to them for an additional fee.  Attendees must bring their own copy to class or they will not receive credit.  Copies are available for purchase through The Appraisal Foundation.

Course Summary

“This seminar will help appraisers and users of appraisal services develop the knowledge and skills they will require in a digital age.”
– John Cirincione, SRA
What if you could accomplish more in less time? It may sound crazy, but the idea that appraising is relegated to retrospective analysis is no longer be relevant. Within five years, experts predict that 50% of our interactions will involve artificial intelligence (AI). That’s going to unlock an entirely new workflow for the appraisal profession and a new set of capabilities that will drive the back office to the forefront of business strategy. What is clear is that AI and the technologies associated with it will continue to transform how we interact with information and machines.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the seminar are to educate appraisers about:

  • Understand the components of AI including the internet, big data, machine learning, and the internet of things.
  • Understand the relationship of the interplay between the components of AI.
  • See how real estate appraisal is impacted by technological change that will be further altered by advances in AI.
  • Understand how to change in order to meet the new challenges.
  • Understand blockchain and how it can be used to facilitate real estate transactions.
  • Understand how technologies work in tandem with blockchain to transform the real estate marketplace.
  • Recognize the challenges and the potential to gain knowledge that you’ll be able to use to provide more relevant analysis to your clients.

Course Summary

Ignorance Isn’t Bliss: Understanding an Investigation by a State Appraiser Regulatory Board or Agency
A regulatory complaint has been filed against you. Now what? Discover why state boards and agencies make the decisions they do, what federal oversight requirements guide them, and how a state regulator’s investigation (including disciplinary action) proceeds by peeking behind the regulatory curtain. Developed by Craig Steinley, SRA, AI-RRS, current President of AARO (Association of Appraiser Regulatory Officials), with input from regulators and board members (who are appraisers) and attorneys who defend appraisers, this 4-hour seminar discusses who files complaints, due process for an appraiser, and the steps to take when you are named in a complaint. With this knowledge, you’ll have an advantage in resolving a complaint and better yet, avoiding one in the first place!
